The famed “Silk Road”, along which camel caravans would carry goods in and out of China, threaded its way through Shangxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and Xinjiang , the most common export being the highly prized Chinese silk, from which the road took its name. Combining ancient monuments and the historical, cultural and scenic wonders of China’s remote northwest. Starting to visit the monuments of Beijing, including the Great Wall. Exploring through back street “Hutong” of Beijing by pedicab. Travel to Xian by train for the stupendous terra cotta army and a walk through the Moslem Quarter of this one-time Silk Road terminus. Then fly on to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, a surprisingly large and modern city on the banks of the upper Yellow River. From Lanzhou, travel south by road to the Moslem cultural enclave of Linxia and then up a winding mountain valley to reach Xiahe, a small Tibetan town on the edge of broad grasslands. We will mingle with the red-robed monks of the large Labrang Yellow Hat Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Xiahe. Fly from Lanzhou to Dunhuang, used to be a major staging post for both in-coming and outgoing trading caravans. Today it attracts visitors because it is the site of one of the greatest examples of Buddhist art in the world- the Mogao Grottos. Travel to Turpan by train, which was an important staging post on the Silk road. Travel further west to visit Urumqi, the capital of the Xing Jiang Autonomous Region, and Kashgar, which has been the epicenter of cultural conflict and cooperation for over two millennia.
