Itinerary:

D1 ( D)
Take night train from Beijing to Datong. Daong was once northern China’s imperial city. It is close to the border with Inner Mongolia. On arrival, transfer to hotel. Overnight in Datong.

D2 (B L D)
Drive to visit Yungang Caves. The 53 statues caves and niches contain 50,000 statues. Most of the caves were carved under the Northern Wei Dynasty between 460 and 494 AD. Then depart to visit Huayan Monastery, built during the Jin Dynasty (1140), its main hall is one of the largest standing in China today. In the afternoon, visit Nine Dragon Screen. which nine stylized dragons are on the main part of the screen. Hotel same as above.

D3 (B L D)
Drive from Datong to Taiyuan. On the way, stop to visit Hanging Monastery, which was originally built more than 1400 years ago, but has been rebuilt several times through centuries. There are 40 halls and pavilions in all. They are built along the contours of the cliff using the natural hollows and outcrops for support. Then to visit Wooden Tower, built during the Liao Dynasty in 1056, it is the oldest and hightest wooden pagoda still standing in China. Overnight in Taiyuan.

D4 (B L D)
Transfer to sightsee in and around Qiao's Family Compound, a old wealth of houses, which are representative of the wealth attained by the Shanxi Merchants. Then to visit Jinci Temple, which is number 1 attraction of Taiyuan, this ancient Buddhist temple had been restored over the centuries right up the Qing Dynasty. The cypress, the long-life spring and the painted clay figures of maids in the Sainted Mother’s Hall are reputed as ‘three wonders of Jinci Temple'. Drive from Taiyuan to Pingyao. Free on your own on arrival in Pingyao. Overnight in Pingyao.

D5 (B L D)
Sightseeing in and around Piangyao old town. The walled ancient town was expanded during the reign of the first Ming Emperor Hong Wu and became flourishing town during the Ming and Qing periods. The town was constructed according to the traditional planning and building style of the Han people and was laid out according to the functions of its different parts. Take evening train from Pingyao to Xian. Overnight on the train.
